In March 2026, the China Building Materials Federation announced the industry’s latest achievements: domestically developed, high-performance modified cement-based anti-corrosion materials, two-component concrete sealers and hardeners, and comprehensive structural crack repair kits have successfully achieved full-chain domestic application in the protection and remediation of concrete structures within urban underground utility tunnels—thereby breaking the previous reliance on imports for high-end materials.
Urban underground utility tunnels are constantly exposed to a complex environment characterized by high humidity, extreme pH levels, and high chloride ion concentrations; consequently, their concrete structures are prone to defects such as corrosion, leakage, and cracking—issues that directly jeopardize the safe operation of critical urban lifelines. The domestically developed material system introduced here centers on modified cement-based materials; through the application of technologies such as polymer modification and nanocrystalline nucleation enhancement, it has achieved a substantial improvement in the materials’ impermeability, corrosion resistance, and crack resistance. Notably, the two-component sealing hardener penetrates deep into the concrete matrix to generate stable C-S-H gel, thereby increasing the concrete’s density by over 60% and effectively blocking the ingress of corrosive agents.
Currently, this material system has been deployed in underground utility tunnel projects across more than 20 cities in regions such as the Yangtze River Delta, the Pearl River Delta, and the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area. It has reduced material costs by 32% compared to imported products and extended the designed service life to over 50 years, thereby providing a domestically sourced material guarantee for the long-term safe operation of urban underground infrastructure within the country.
